  10. This document is organized into the following sections:

  20. Rescue Disk Organization
  21. ========================
  22.  
  23. This disk is organized into three directories. 
  24.  
  25. 1. The root directory stores utility programs that can help you identify 
  26.    and correct problems with your system. The root directory also contains
  27.    a copy of your AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files. Note that any 
  28.    reference to the Windows startup program, win.com, was removed by
  29.    the Boot Disk Utility to ensure you can get control of your system.
  30.  
  31. 2. The \VAULT directory stores key configuration files. These files contain
  32.    two types of information. First, these files contain instructions that
  33.    that are executed each time your machine is turned on or Windows is
  34.    started. Second, these files contain information about your system 
  35.    configuration. For example, these files store information about your
  36.    color and printer preferences. The configuration files stored on this
  37.    disk are:
  38.  
  39.    AUTOEXEC.BAT - MS-DOS Startup Batch File. This file contains startup
  40.           commands that are executed each time your machine
  41.           is started (booted). This file is located in the root
  42.           directory of your default drive (usually C:\).
  43.  
  44.    CONFIG.SYS   - MS-DOS Configuration File. This file contains instructions 
  45.           to configure your system and is used each time your
  46.           machine is started. For example, this file contains 
  47.           information about how memory is configured, how many
  48.           files may be open at once.
  49.  
  50.    PROGMAN.INI  - Program Manager Configuration File.
  51.  
  52.    REG.DAT      - Windows Registration Database. Stores information about
  53.           Windows Applications. For example, this database (and
  54.           WIN.INI) store file associations used by Program Manager
  55.           and File Manager. These associations allow you to 
  56.           double click on a filename like MYFILE.TXT and have it 
  57.           displayed by the NOTEPAD application.
  58.    
  59.    SYSTEM.INI   - Windows Configuration File. Contains global information
  60.           Windows when it starts. This file stores information 
  61.           about your video display.
  62.  
  63.    WIN.INI      - Windows Configuration File. This file contains 
  64.           information about your Windows environment. For example,
  65.           the DESKTOP section of WIN.INI stores information about
  66.           the appearance of your desktop and the position of 
  67.           windows and icons.
  68.  
  69.    STARTUP.GRP  - This file stores information about the Program Manager
  70.           Startup group. All programs in this special group are
  71.           started when windows is started.
  72.  
  73. 3. The \USRFILES directory stores files you requested to be archived. 
  74.    
  75.  
  76. Utility Programs
  77. ================
  78.  
  79. The root directory contains two types of utility files. 
  80.  
  81.    (1) Utilities copied from your MS-DOS and Windows directories. 
  82.    (2) PCSoft Help File and Utilities.
  83.  
  84. The MS-DOS and Windows Utilities listed below are normally copied to the 
  85. boot diskette. Refer to any MS-DOS or Windows book or manual for                                   
  86. additional information about these utilities. Items marked with * are
  87. not placed on the diskette if you are using DOS version 1.x through 4.x.
  88.  
  89.   CHKDSK        - Checks the status of a disk and displays a status report. 
  90.   
  91.   EDIT          - Full Featured Text Editor
  92.  
  93. * EXPAND        - Expands a compressed file. You can use this command
  94.           to retrieve one or more files from MS-DOS and Windows
  95.           setup disks. These files are not usable unless you
  96.           expand them.
  97.  
  98.   FORMAT        - Formats a disk for use with MS-DOS. USE CAUTION WHEN 
  99.           USING THIS UTILITY!!
  100.  
  101.   MSD           - Provides detailed technical information about your
  102.           computer.
  103.  
  104.   SYS           - Creates a startup disk by copying hidden MS-DOS system
  105.           files and the MS-DOS command interpreter (COMMAND.COM)
  106.           to the disk.
  107. * UNDELETE      - Restores files that were previously deleted by using
  108.           the DEL (delete) command.
  109.  
  110. * UNFORMAT      - Unformat a disk that was erased by using the FORMAT 
  111.           utility. 
  112.  
  113. Listed below are the PCSoft help and utilities on this diskette.
  114.  
  115.   AUTOEXEC.BAT  - The Boot Disk Builder copied the AUTOEXEC.BAT file
  116.           from your hard drive and made the following 
  117.           modifications: 
  118.  
  119.               (1) References to Windows startup program, win.com,
  120.               are commented out using the REM statement.
  121.               (2) PCSoft Boot Diskette Menu is added at the
  122.               end of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
  123.   COMPARE       - Compares the configuration files on your system
  124.           with the configuration files archived in the 
  125.           \VAULT directory of this disk.
  126.  
  127.   BOOTHELP.TXT  - This text file with help information.
  128.  
  129.   NEEDHELP      - Command to display this help information file.
  130.

  133.  
  134. Starting System With AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS
  135. ================================================
  136.  
  137. Follow the procedure listed below to start your system using the 
  138. AUTOEXEC.BAT file and/or CONFIG.SYS file archived on this disk. This
  139. procedure assumes your default hard disk is C: and the boot diskette
  140. is inserted in floppy drive A:
  141.  
  142. Note: The commands below are typed at the DOS prompt.
  143.  
  144. 1. Type the following commands to save the current AUTOEXEC.BAT and  
  145.    CONFIG.SYS files on your hard drive: 
  146.  
  147.        COPY C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT C:\AUTOEXEC.SVE
  148.        COPY C:\CONFIG.SYS   C:\CONFIG.SVE
  149.        COPY C:\COMMAND.COM  C:\COMMAND.SVE 
  150.  
  151. 2. Type the following commands to replace the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS
  152.    files archived on this diskette:
  153.     
  154.       COPY A:\VAULT\AUTOEXEC.BAT C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT
  155.       COPY A:\VAULT\CONFIG.SYS   C:\CONFIG.SYS
  156.       COPY A:\COMMAND.COM        C:\COMMAND.COM
  157.  
  158. 3. Remove the boot diskette and restart you system. 
  159.  
  160. Hint: If you are using MS-DOS version 6.0 or later, then you can press F8 
  161.       when you see "Starting MS-DOS" to single step through the AUTOEXEC.BAT
  162.       and CONFIG.SYS files. If you would like to start your system 
  163.       without using the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS, then press F5 when
  164.       you see "Starting MS-DOS".

  167. Starting Your System Using the Windows Configuration Files on This Disk
  168. =======================================================================
  169.  
  170. Follow the procedure listed below to start your system using the 
  171. Windows configuration files archived on this diskette. This procedure
  172. assumes your Windows directory is C:\WINDOWS and the boot diskette is
  173. inserted in floppy drive A:
  174.  
  175. Note: The commands below are typed at the DOS prompt.
  176.  
  177. 1. Type the following commands to save the current Windows configuration
  178.    files on your hard drive.
  179.  
  180.        COPY C:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI       C:\WINDOWS\WIN.SVE
  181.        COPY C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.SVE
  182.        COPY C:\WINDOWS\REG.DAT       C:\WINDOWS\REG.SVE
  183.        COPY C:\WINDOWS\PROGMAN.INI   C:\WINDOWS\PROGMAN.SVE
  184.        COPY C:\WINDOWS\STARTUP.GRP   C:\WINDOWS\STARTUP.SVE

  187. 2. Type the following commands to restore your Windows configuration files
  188.    using the archives on this diskette:
  189.     
  190.        COPY A:\VAULT\WIN.INI         C:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI
  191.        COPY A:\VALUT\SYSTEM.INI      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI
  192.        COPY A:\VAULT\REG.DAT         C:\WINDOWS\REG.DAT
  193.        COPY A:\VAULT\PROGMAN.INI     C:\WINDOWS\PROGMAN.INI
  194.        COPY A:\VAULT\STARTUP.GRP     C:\WINDOWS\STARTUP.GRP
  195.  
  196. 3. Start Windows by typing the following command:
  197.  
  198.        C:\WINDOWS\WIN.COM
  199.    
  200.        Note: C:\WINDOWS is the default Windows directory.
  201.  
  202. Common Problems and Solutions
  203. =============================
  204.  
  205. Problem 1:   Windows will not start after installing new software
  206.          application.
  207.  
  208. Solution :   Run COMPARE.BAT on this diskette and determine what 
  209.          changes the install program made to your configuration 
  210.          files. Assuming you refreshed this diskette JUST BEFORE
  211.          performing the application installation, you may restore
  212.          configuration files by:
  213.  
  214.         1. Restoring your Windows Configuration files using
  215.            the procedure in the previous section of this 
  216.            document.
  217.  
  218.         2. Restoring your MS-DOS Configuration files using
  219.            the procedure listed in the Starting System With 
  220.            AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS section of this document.
  221.  
  222. Problem 2:   Windows will not start after uninstalling an application.
  223.  
  224. Solution :   Run COMPARE.BAT on this diskette and determine the changes
  225.          made to your configuration files. Assuming you refreshed this
  226.          diskette JUST BEFORE performing the uninstall, you may 
  227.          restore your system by:
  228.  
  229.         1. Restoring your Windows Configuration files using
  230.            the procedure in the previous section of this 
  231.            document.
  232.  
  233.         2. Restoring your MS-DOS Configuration files using
  234.            the procedure listed in the Starting System With 
  235.            AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS section of this document.
  236.  
  237.         3. Run UNDELETE program on this diskette to recover
  238.            files deleted during the uninstallation.
  239.  
  240. Problem 3:   Unable to start windows after changing video display using
  241.          setup program.
  242.  
  243. Solution :   Run COMPARE.BAT on this diskette and determine the changes
  244.          made to your configuration files. Assuming you refreshed this
  245.          diskette JUST BEFORE using setup, you may restore your 
  246.          video display configuration by using the procedure in the
  247.          previous section of this document.
  248.  
  249. Hint     :  If you use the Windows Program Manager, then the last video  
  250.         driver file name used is stored in the file 
  251.         \VAULT\PROGMAN.INI. Look for the line display.drv=XXXXXXXX. The
  252.         XXXXXXXX is the video driver file name.
